New AI music maker in Gemini

Google has given Gemini the ability to generate AI‑created music, powered by DeepMind’s latest audio model, Lyria 3. Beta access is rolling out in the Gemini app, letting users create 30‑second tracks from text, images, or videos without leaving the chatbot window.

Availability and access

  • Global launch: today, in English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese.
  • Eligibility: limited to Gemini app users who are 18 years or older.
  • Future expansion: additional languages are planned.

How it works

  • Text‑to‑music: describe a genre, mood, or memory (e.g., “Afrobeat track for my mother about the great times we had growing up”) and Gemini generates a song.
  • Instrumental and lyrical options: the generator can produce instrumental audio or full songs with automatically composed lyrics.
  • Multimodal prompts: upload photographs or video references; Gemini uses them to craft a track whose lyrics match the vibe.
  • Cover art: each song receives custom cover art generated by Nano Banana, making sharing and downloading easier.
  • YouTube integration: Lyria 3 is also being added to YouTube’s Dream Track tool, enabling creators to produce AI soundtracks for Shorts.

“The goal of these tracks isn’t to create a musical masterpiece, but rather to give you a fun, unique way to express yourself,” Google said in its announcement blog.

Google emphasizes that Lyria 3 is designed for original expression, not for mimicking existing artists. When a specific artist is requested, Gemini produces a track that shares a similar style or mood while applying filters to check outputs against copyrighted material.

Background and comparison

  • Lyria has existed since 2023, originally available only through Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform.
  • The Gemini integration makes the AI music maker more accessible to consumers.
  • However, it arrives after platforms like TikTok and Microsoft’s Copilot have already launched their own AI music tools.
