Gemini for Home Overview

Google is expanding its Gemini for Home initiative, positioning it as a “full‑stack AI” offering that combines Google Home APIs with Gemini’s capabilities. The program provides hardware partners with validated, scalable reference designs—including SoCs, sensors, and microphones—so they can develop, mass‑produce, and release cameras and speakers that feature Gemini controls.

Hardware Partnerships

The company is encouraging carriers, ISPs, and security firms to use these reference designs and integrate the Google Home Premium AI subscription service into the devices they build. This approach lets partners skip the multi‑year research and development phase typically required for AI‑enabled hardware.

Google Home Premium Subscription

Google Home Premium (formerly Nest Aware) offers features such as:

  • Home Brief – a summary of home activity while you’re away.
  • Advanced deterrents – simulated presence in empty homes via automations.

Pricing:

  • Standard tier: at least $10/month or $100/year.
  • Advanced tier: roughly double the standard price.

If you’re already subscribed to Google’s $20‑per‑month AI Pro plan, you receive standard access included. The $250‑per‑month Ultra subscription provides the advanced tier.

Updated Home App

Google has redesigned its Home app to prioritize the AI assistant. The new app includes an “Ask Home” button that lets users query Gemini directly. If users prefer the traditional Google Assistant, the button will prompt them to sign up for the AI experience.

Alternatives

For users who don’t want Gemini pervasive in their smart home, alternatives such as Home Assistant or Apple HomeKit can be used for automation. Instructions for removing Gemini from Google apps are available here.
