Google Weather app for Android might be replaced by redesign in Search

Overview
Over the years, the Google Weather Android “app” has seen infrequent updates, and the company now appears to be getting rid of it entirely in favor of a redesigned Google Search experience.
If you’re not on a Pixel device (which uses the fully native Pixel Weather app), Google’s Weather “app” on Android is actually an extension of Google Search. After saving the shortcut—identified by a sun icon badge with a “G”—to your home screen, the feed starts with a search bar that also lets you switch to other saved places.
Pixel Weather vs. Google Weather
- Current conditions: temperature, high/low, condition, and “feels like” displayed prominently with the Froggy mascot.
- Hourly forecast: carousel showing hourly data; tapping an hour reveals detailed graphs for precipitation, wind, and humidity.
- 10‑day forecast: list that can be tapped to show details.
- Additional cards (under current conditions): Wind, Humidity, UV Index, Pressure, Sunrise & Sunset.
Recent Changes and Potential Removal
- The last redesign of the traditional Weather app occurred in 2023.
- Since mid‑October, several reports have surfaced that the Weather shortcut no longer launches the Weather “app” but instead opens Google Search results.
- One user saw a message in the Google app: “The weather page has moved – Your home screen shortcut now leads to Google Search.”
- This migration appears to be rolling out gradually and is not present on all devices/accounts checked.
- Google Weather for Wear OS is also no longer available for new users; existing installations remain functional, but new users are directed to the wearable’s built‑in weather application.
Search Weather Redesign
The mobile UI for searching “weather” in the Google app or on mobile web has been recently redesigned:
- The Froggy background card still shows the current temperature, condition, and “feels like.”
- The hourly forecast is now incorporated directly above the mascot.
- A carousel of the 10‑day forecast appears underneath, allowing taps to update the hourly view above.
- Precipitation, wind, humidity, and air quality are presented as an expandable list. The first three items reveal hourly details, while the AQI entry shows a bar graph.
These upgrades exist on a Google Search results page alongside other web links. While the lack of a full‑screen experience can feel cluttered, the redesign is live for all Android (and iOS) users. The “View all details” button still opens the Weather app for most users, but on devices where the server‑side change has been applied, that button disappears.
