Overview

Google is extending its Gemini AI assistant to desktop computers. After launching a Gemini Windows app, the company released a native Gemini app for macOS a day later.

How to Access

  • The macOS Gemini app offers a native desktop experience that can be opened with keyboard shortcuts.
  • By default:
    • Option + Space opens a mini chat.
    • Option + Shift + Space opens the full Gemini chat interface.
  • These shortcuts can be customized in the app’s settings.

Key Features

  • Screen sharing: Users can share anything displayed on their screen—including files, images, documents, data, or code—and ask Gemini questions about the content.
  • Web page sharing: Full web pages can be shared with Gemini, not just the visible portion of the screen.
  • Generative media: The app supports image generation via Nano Banana and video generation via Veo.
  • Availability: The Gemini app runs on Macs with macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later and is available in all countries and languages where Gemini is supported.

Outlook

Michael Friedman, group product manager for the Gemini app, wrote in a blog post:

“We’re building the foundation for a truly personal, proactive and powerful desktop assistant, with more news to share in the coming months.”

This development comes as Apple is expected to unveil a generative‑AI‑enhanced Siri at WWDC in June, with deep integration into macOS apps and powered by Gemini models.
