Announcement at Galaxy Unpacked

Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, took the stage at Galaxy Unpacked and teased “amazing things” coming to Android 17. He described Android’s evolution from an operating system to an “intelligent system” that truly understands and works for users. Samat said, “We’ve got some amazing things in the next release of Android, and I’m excited to share more about that in the coming months.”

Android 17 Timeline

Android 17 entered beta earlier this month (details). While Google has not yet revealed its flagship features, the platform is expected to be mostly finalized by May, ahead of the stable June launch. The conference could also preview features slated for future Quarterly Platform Releases, with QPR2 in December positioned as a major upgrade (schedule).

Gemini Evolution and Automation

Samat highlighted “Gemini’s next evolution” that aims to help users get more done across their phones. These capabilities will debut on the Galaxy S26 and Pixel 10 series next month and are tied to Android 16 QPR3’s screen‑automation features (see here). Gemini automation was presented as a preview of upcoming Android functionality, building on existing features such as the Gemini overlay, Magic Cue, and notification summaries (more on Gemini automation).

“Android is always where you see the future first.”
