Google Prepares Smart Reply 'Tap to Edit' Feature for Android Users
Source: Dev.to

Overview
Google is developing a Smart Reply “Tap to Edit” feature for Android users. While the existing Smart Reply in Google Messages suggests quick responses based on the received message, those suggestions are sent immediately when tapped, which can lead to accidental or unwanted messages.
How “Tap to Edit” Works
- Users tap a suggested Smart Reply option.
- Instead of sending instantly, the app opens an edit screen.
- Users can modify the text, add details, or delete the suggestion before sending.
This workflow gives users a chance to verify and refine their replies, especially useful for longer or more complex messages.
Benefits
- Reduced errors: Prevents accidental sending of inappropriate or incomplete replies.
- Improved security: Allows users to review and remove sensitive information before it leaves the device.
- Better control: Enables fine‑tuning of AI‑generated suggestions to match the intended tone and content.
Current Status
The “Tap to Edit” feature is still in development and not yet available to the general public. Google plans to roll it out in future updates of Android messaging apps.
