TL;DR

  • Google Play Store will soon add badges to highlight apps optimized for large‑screen devices like tablets and foldables.
  • The update also includes small usability tweaks, such as better visibility of content ratings, improved install flows, and subscription info in reviews.

Large‑Screen Badge

According to the latest Play Services changelog, Play Store version 51.2 will introduce a new badge that highlights apps designed for large screens. This should make it easier for users to find apps that properly scale across tablets and foldables instead of awkwardly stretched phone layouts.

The badge aligns with Google’s broader push toward better big‑screen experiences on Android. By clearly labeling apps that work well on larger displays, users can avoid poorly adapted apps.

Google already uses badges for other purposes, such as those for official government apps or apps offering legitimate VPN services.

The move may also foreshadow future developments, like the rumored Aluminium OS platform, suggesting Google is preparing for more large‑screen Android devices.

Additional Play Store Changes in Version 51.2

  • Content rating view: An additional view of an app’s content rating is now available.
  • Inline install behavior: Auto‑invoked inline install calls no longer deep‑link into the Play Store.
  • Collections on tablets: Access Collections on tablets by long‑pressing the Play Store app icon or adding the Play widget from Android widget settings.
  • Subscription info in reviews: Users can now review subscription plans they own directly within app ratings and reviews.

These features are not yet rolling out; they will become available once the Play Store update reaches devices.
