Google Pics is a new app that tries to fix AI image editing

Google is launching a new AI image generation app for Workspace called Pics. The app introduces a feature that lets users modify specific parts of an image without rewriting the entire prompt. By clicking on an element they want to change and leaving a short note—much like commenting in a Google Doc—users can request targeted edits.
Pics is powered by a combination of Gemini and Google’s Nano Banana 2 image model. In a demo shown to reporters, a Google employee designing a child’s birthday party invitation used the feature to:
- Click on an image of a cat and add a note to replace it with a dog.
- Click on the address text to edit the wording directly.
After submitting the notes, Pics updated the invitation. In the demo, the “dog” still resembled a cat, illustrating the model’s current limitations.
The app is initially rolling out as a standalone web app for trusted testers, with a broader release planned later this summer for subscribers to Google’s AI Ultra plan. Eventually, Google aims to integrate Pics into other Workspace applications, allowing users to create and edit images without leaving the app they’re working in.
