According to Google, AI Mode in Google Search has now surpassed 1 billion monthly users, and AI Overviews are now ubiquitous at the top of every results page.
At Google I/O 2026 today, Google announced several new AI‑driven updates for Search.
Google Search AI upgrades
Google is upgrading AI Mode to the brand‑new Gemini 3.5 Flash, announced at I/O.
The search box is also receiving a major refresh. The new AI Search Box with Intelligent Search is the first update to Google’s search box in more than 25 years. When typing a query, the box expands to give users more space to ask natural‑language questions. It also supports uploading images, videos, files, and Chrome tabs alongside the query for reference.

AI Overviews are getting an upgrade, allowing users to ask follow‑up questions directly in AI Mode. This enables a back‑and‑forth conversation, similar to a chatbot, so users can dive deeper into the topic.

Search agents
Google announced AI Search agents for Search. Users can provide a search agent with detailed query parameters, and the agent will continuously scan sources—news sites, blogs, social media—to find the most relevant, up‑to‑date information.

Example use case

These information agents will be available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers this summer.
Agentic AI capabilities are also being expanded for shopping and booking experiences. Users will see the latest prices, availability, and direct booking links after providing agents with their preferences. Additionally, agents will be able to call specific businesses for certain services, with these features rolling out to all users this summer.

Even more AI features announced
Google is expanding Personal Intelligence in Search to all users, without a subscription. Personal Intelligence lets users connect apps such as Gmail and Google Photos, enabling the AI to understand query context using personal data. Integration with Google Calendar is coming soon, and users retain full control over the data used.
Google is also bringing AI coding tools, powered by Google Antigravity, directly into Search. These tools aim to help non‑developers build custom solutions—e.g., a fitness tracker or a wedding‑planning dashboard.
