Google Home app
Google is ending April with a sizable update to the Home app, introducing an Updated Camera Experience and a refreshed media control interface.
Updated Camera Experience
The modernization adds dynamic theming and makes key features more accessible, especially at the bottom of the screen.
- Clearer Event Descriptions – Refined AI descriptions remove clutter, making them more accurate and easier to read at a glance.
- Faster Search – Camera search results load noticeably quicker in Ask Home.
- Simplified Camera Settings – Useful features such as Gemini for Home, familiar face detection, and Activity Zones are easier to find. Activity Zones configure and update faster, and seen/heard events are combined into a single page for streamlined recording and notifications.
For Advanced plan subscribers of Google Home Premium, the timeline now includes AI descriptions, helping you scroll through history and identify interesting moments more easily.
New Media Control Experience
The media control experience when casting music and videos to Google smart speakers, smart displays, Google TV Streamer, and other Cast devices is now available to all users. This builds on last year’s Material 3 redesign.
- Album artwork is displayed prominently, putting your favorite artists front and center.
- Playback controls and device management are more accessible.
- Controller pages show instant account‑relinking prompts when an expired partner link is behind offline devices.
- Feedback reports include more detailed diagnostic information to help Google fix issues faster.
Google Home Premium users also benefit from account holds: subscriptions are temporarily paused rather than ending if there are payment issues, preserving video history, familiar faces, and AI event descriptions.
Gemini for Home voice assistant
The latest Gemini for Home updates deliver Faster Smart Home Control, making lights and plugs up to 1.5 seconds quicker to respond. Google attributes this speed boost to optimized processing of device commands and home layouts.
Speed improvements
- Near‑instant execution of alarm, timer, and reminder commands, even with specific times or names.
- Live for English, French, and Spanish users in supported countries, with more languages coming soon.
Enhanced command handling
- Better distinction between standalone commands and follow‑up requests.
- Context‑aware filtering of irrelevant speech, useful for Continued Conversation.
- Custom Routines run more reliably without interference from other smart‑home commands.
Example commands
- “Turn on the kitchen lights.”
- “Set a timer for 10 minutes.”
- “Cancel my pizza timer.”
- “Hey Google, I’m home.” (triggers the “I’m home” routine)
- “Hey Google, set a timer for 10 minutes… and turn off the fan.”
- “Hey Google, what’s the weather?” → “How about in Seattle?”
