Potential Apple Watch Support

One downside to owning an Apple Watch is that it doesn’t support the Google Health app (formerly the Fitbit app). Google has hinted that the app and Health Coach feature could eventually come to Apple’s wearable line.

Comments from Google Representative

“Anyone can download the Google Health app, not just Fitbit users. So while we think it will work amazing with our Fitbit and Pixel Watch devices, you will be able to download it and use it by connecting other wearables or no wearable at all, in order to bring all of your health data securely all into one place, and we will be adding support for the Google Health Coach over time for more devices. So out of the box, people can download it. And then we’ll alert them when their device, for example, an Apple Watch, is supported at a later date.”

Abramson also elaborated on support for the Apple ecosystem:

“With Fitbit Air, of course, we’re supporting iOS users. Anyone across Android and iOS can use it. As far as if you do not have a Fitbit device, you can download Google Health. You will be able to import all of your data. You can pull in all of your health records. And a user who does this will see an alert that they can get information and be alerted when their device is supported. So yeah, we are looking to add support beyond our current Fitbit and Pixel Watch devices, although we think it will be best with one of those.”

Outlook

This isn’t a guarantee that Google Health will arrive on the Apple Watch, but the use of Apple’s device as an example suggests plans may be underway. Users might not need to wait much longer to see the former Fitbit app on an Apple wearable.

Google also announced other updates, including the newly launched Fitbit Air wearable, the rebranding of Google Health, and the renaming of Fitbit Premium to Google Health Premium.
