Overview
Alongside a slew of new AI‑focused announcements at I/O 2026, Google announced Wear OS 7, the latest update to its wearable operating system. The update carries over design tweaks planned for Android 17, lays the groundwork for new Gemini Intelligence features, and adds interface elements that display glanceable information in new ways.
Wear Widgets
The biggest addition is Wear Widgets, an evolution of the informational “tiles” that have long been central to Wear OS. Widgets are more dynamic and customizable for developers and closely mirror what can be offered on smartphones. Using Google’s AI‑powered Create My Widget tool, users can create widgets that also appear on smartwatches.
Live Updates and Media Controls
- Live Updates – Google’s system for displaying real‑time information on Android lock screens is coming to Wear OS.
- Default workout tracker – Includes built‑in media controls that work across wearable fitness apps.
- Media control settings – Allows users to decide which apps automatically launch the Wear OS media controls interface.
- Remote Output Switcher – Lets users switch between headphones or speakers for streamed audio.
Gemini Integration
Wear OS 7 introduces several APIs for developers to connect their apps to Google’s Gemini Intelligence system:
- AppFunctions API – Integrates app features and functions with Google Assistant.
- Support for invoking task automation (e.g., placing a food‑delivery order) directly from the wrist.
Availability
Google will detail more features during I/O 2026. A test version is already available via the Wear OS 7 Canary Emulator, ahead of its release later this year.
