Early Life and Career
James Gosling was born in 1955 in Canada. He joined Sun Microsystems in 1984, where he would work for 26 years.
Creation of Java
In 1994, while writing a program to port software from a PERQ by translating PERQ Q‑Code to VAX assembler, Gosling conceived the idea that would become Java. He designed the language, implemented the compiler (javac), and built the Java Virtual Machine (JVM).
Later Career
- 2010 – Gosling left Sun Microsystems on April 2, 2010 and later took a critical stance toward Oracle after it acquired Java.
- 2011 – Joined Google in March 2011 for a six‑month stint.
- 2012–2016 – Worked with Bill Vass at the startup Liquid Robotics. The company was acquired by Boeing in 2016.
- 2017–2024 – Joined Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a Distinguished Engineer and retired in 2024.
Awards and Honors
- 2002 – The Economist Innovation Award
- 2002 – USENIX Lifetime Achievement (Flame) Award
- 2007 – Officer of the Order of Canada (Canada’s second‑highest civilian honor)
- 2013 – Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)

- 2019 – Computer History Museum Fellow for the conception, design, and implementation of the Java programming language
Legacy
Despite challenges and disagreements with Oracle over decision‑making authority, James Gosling remains widely recognized as the “father of Java.” His resilience and contributions continue to inspire developers worldwide.
