Launch Details
Nvidia silently launched a new 12 GB version of its RTX 5070 mobile GPU yesterday. The upgrade replaces the previous 16 Gb (2 GB) GDDR7 chips with 24 Gb (3 GB) chips, raising memory throughput from 384 GB/s to roughly 576 GB/s while keeping the rest of the GPU unchanged.
Framework Graphics Module
Framework officially announced the 12 GB RTX 5070 Laptop GPU and introduced a new Graphics Module for the Framework Laptop 16. This is the third graphics module released by Framework, emphasizing the company’s commitment to upgradable laptop graphics.

The 12 GB model is otherwise identical to the 8 GB version, sharing:
- 4,608 CUDA cores
- Maximum TGP of 100 W
- Boost clock of 2.4 GHz
The value added by Framework lies in the modular, drop‑in upgrade capability—no other brand currently offers comparable graphics modules or add‑in cards for laptops.
Pricing Rationale
Framework’s pricing for the 12 GB module is $1,199, which is $500 more than the $699 price of the 8 GB version (a 72 % increase). The higher cost is largely attributed to:
- GDDR7 expense: The newer 3 GB chips are more expensive, originally intended for higher‑end SKUs.
- Global memory shortage: An AI‑driven surge in demand has strained GDDR7 supply, driving prices up.
In a comment response, Framework warned that once its current GDDR7 allocation is exhausted, even the 8 GB RTX 5070 mobile will be restocked at a higher price.
Memory Shortage Impact
The ongoing AI boom has caused a worldwide shortage of high‑bandwidth memory. Major memory manufacturers have redirected production capacity to data centers, leaving consumer‑grade GDDR7 scarce and costly. Consequently, Framework expects the cost of the 8 GB configuration to rise once existing inventory is depleted.
