First British Baby Born Using Transplanted Womb From Dead Donor

Background

Grace Bell was born without a viable uterus due to Mayer‑Rokitansky‑Küster‑Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, a condition that affects roughly one in every 5,000 women.

Transplant Procedure

In June 2024, Bell underwent a 10‑hour uterus transplant at The Churchill Hospital in Oxford. The donor uterus was obtained from a deceased donor, making it the first such transplant in the UK.

Birth of Hugo

A 10‑week‑old boy named Hugo was born just before Christmas 2025 at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in west London. He weighed nearly 7 lb and was conceived through IVF and embryo transfer at The Lister Fertility Clinic. Hugo is the first baby born in the UK from a deceased‑donor uterus transplant and the first child born from any of the three transplants completed so far in a UK clinical research trial that aims to perform ten procedures using deceased donors.

Other UK Transplants

Earlier in 2025, baby Amy became the first UK birth from a living‑donor uterus transplant. Her mother received her older sister’s uterus in January 2023.

Global Context

More than 100 uterus transplants have been performed worldwide, resulting in over 70 healthy births.
