Figma partners with OpenAI to bake in support for Codex
Source: TechCrunch

Figma is integrating OpenAI’s AI coding tool, Codex, to let users create and tweak designs from within their coding environments. The move follows a week‑old partnership with Anthropic to embed Claude Code in Figma.
How the integration works
- Users can start a design in Figma or write code in Codex and move between the two platforms using Figma’s MCP (Model Context Protocol) server.
- Previously, details from Figma design files, Figma Make, or FigJam could be imported into Codex for code‑based implementation.
Leadership comments
“With this integration, teams can build on their best ideas—not just their first idea—by combining the best of code with the creativity, collaboration, and craft that comes with Figma’s infinite canvas.”
— Loredan Crisan, Figma’s Chief Design Officer
“The integration makes Codex powerful for a much broader range of builders and businesses because it doesn’t assume you’re ‘a designer’ or ‘an engineer’ first. Engineers can iterate visually without leaving their flow, and designers can work closer to real implementation without becoming full‑time coders.”
— Alexander Embiricos, Codex product lead
Background on Codex
OpenAI first launched Codex as a command‑line coding assistant in April 2025 to compete with Anthropic’s Claude Code【source】(https://techcrunch.com/2025/04/16/openai-debuts-codex-cli-an-open-source-coding-tool-for-terminals/). Later that year the tool was integrated into ChatGPT【source】(https://techcrunch.com/2025/05/16/openai-launches-codex-an-ai-coding-agent-in-chatgpt/), and in February 2026 a dedicated macOS app was released【source】(https://techcrunch.com/2026/02/02/openai-launches-new-macos-app-for-agentic-coding/).
Recent Codex updates
- The macOS app was downloaded a million times within the first week of release【source】(https://x.com/sama/status/2019219967250669741?s=20).
- OpenAI released two new Codex models shortly thereafter【source 1】(https://techcrunch.com/2026/02/05/openai-launches-new-agentic-coding-model-only-minutes-after-anthropic-drops-its-own/)【source 2】(https://techcrunch.com/2026/02/12/a-new-version-of-openais-codex-is-powered-by-a-new-dedicated-chip/).
- Over a million users are using Codex weekly【source】(https://x.com/sama/status/2019219967250669741?s=20).
Figma’s partnership history with OpenAI
Figma was one of the first companies to launch an app inside ChatGPT in October 2025【source】(https://techcrunch.com/2025/10/06/openai-launches-apps-inside-of-chatgpt/). The new Codex integration deepens that collaboration, giving designers and engineers a unified workflow across design and code.
