Facebook and Instagram are introducing a new method to detect and remove users under the age of 13: AI bone‑structure analysis. In a blog post published on Tuesday, Meta — the parent company of Facebook and Instagram — explained that its AI system will scan photos and videos posted to the platforms for “general themes and visual cues,” such as height and bone structure.

“We want to be clear: this is not facial recognition,” Meta wrote, adding that the system “does not identify the specific person in the image.”

The technology is part of Meta’s broader effort to keep children under 13 off its services. In addition to analyzing visual content, the system will also examine posts, comments, bios, and captions for “contextual clues” that may indicate a user’s age.
