What is Escape the Backrooms?

  • Genre: First‑person horror adventure
  • Developer: Fancy Games
  • Publisher: Secret Mode
  • Modes: Single‑player, cooperative (up to 4 players)

Escape the Backrooms is a first‑person horror adventure game developed by Fancy Games and published by Secret Mode. It features over 28 main playable levels, various transition areas, and supports both single‑player and cooperative play for up to four players. Players must navigate each level, avoid dangerous entities, solve puzzles, and collect keys to ultimately escape.

Levels

  • Main playable levels: 28+
  • Total scenes (including transitions): 35+
  • Range: From the tutorial‑style Level 0 to the final Level 3999, which serves as the true ending.

Maps & Keys

Detailed navigation maps are available in the Maps & Keys section. Each map includes:

  • Spawn points
  • Key locations
  • Exit routes

You can browse maps by level to find the specific layout you need.

Finding Keys

Keys are required to progress through many levels. Examples:

  • Level 0: Find a key after repairing the ladder.
  • Level 1 (Section II): Four keys hidden in wardrobes.
  • Level 5: Obtain keys by placing Moth Jelly in the Food Elevator.

Codes & Solutions

Many levels require elevator codes, door codes, or computer passwords. The Codes & Solutions page lists all known entries, such as:

  • Elevator codes: Level 3 – 042, Level 5 – 314
  • Door codes: Level 1 – 1234
  • Computer passwords: Level 94 – PASSWORD

Each entry includes the location, usage instructions, and reference images.

Entities

The Entity Database provides information on all in‑game entities, their behaviors, locations, and danger levels. Highlights:

  • Hound: Aggressive and fast; avoid early levels.
  • Moth (Level 5): Attracted to light; keep light sources off near them.

Level 3999 & Task List System

Level 3999 is the final level and the only “escape” ending. It introduces a task list system where players must complete randomly generated tasks (e.g., breaking glass, finding specific items, solving puzzles) before they can exit.

Each level has defined entrances and exits:

  • Some levels can be accessed from multiple previous levels.
  • Others have a single entry point.

The progression is generally linear, though certain levels offer alternative routes or shortcuts. Detailed entrance/exit information is provided in the level guides.

Multiplayer

Escape the Backrooms supports cooperative multiplayer for up to four players. Playing with friends can make navigation easier, allow resource sharing, and help complete objectives. Solo play is also possible for a more challenging experience.

Getting Unstuck

If you become stuck:

  1. Consult the detailed level walkthroughs for step‑by‑step instructions.
  2. Review the relevant maps for layout clues.
  3. Check the Codes & Solutions page for any required codes.
  4. Refer to the Entity Database for strategies to avoid or deal with hostile entities.

These resources are designed to help you progress without spoiling the entire experience.
