Environmental activist Erin Brockovich has turned her attention to a new frontier: AI data centers. She recently launched the Brockovich AI Data Center Reporting website, a crowdsourced map that tracks AI data centers that are operational, under construction, or proposed across the United States. Users can also submit locations in their own communities.

“The RACE to build AI infrastructures is unfolding town by town across America. In some places, data centers are welcomed. In others, they are delayed, contested or abandoned altogether. This MAP captures the real‑world footprint of that race — revealing patterns of growth, conflict and uncertainty.” — Erin Brockovich

The site visualizes dozens of facilities and invites public contributions to keep the map up‑to‑date.

Political and Community Response

Data‑center construction has become a flashpoint in state and local politics. Communities are organizing to halt new projects, and environmental groups as well as the NAACP have joined the fight. See the related coverage:

Erin Brockovich – Past Activism

In the 1990s, while working as a legal clerk, Brockovich uncovered a massive cover‑up by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) involving groundwater contamination in Hinkley, California. The ensuing lawsuit forced PG&E to pay a historic $333 million settlement, then the largest direct‑action lawsuit settlement in U.S. history.

Her story was dramatized in the 2000 film Erin Brockovich, with Julia Roberts portraying the activist and winning an Oscar for the role.

Current Data Center Statistics

  • Operational AI data centers: 33
  • Under‑construction locations: 44
  • Proposed facilities: 27
  • User‑submitted reports: 2,716

The majority of reports come from Texas, with 612 entries statewide. Sulphur Springs, TX, alone accounts for 297 reports.

Environmental Impact

Large AI data centers have substantial resource demands:

  • According to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, a single AI data center can consume up to 5 million gallons of water per day—roughly the daily usage of a town of 10,000–50,000 residents.
  • A UK‑based study reported that AI data centers could emit nearly one million additional tons of CO₂ annually, exceeding previous estimates. (Mashable report)

Community Impact and Moratoria

The website’s Community Impact page highlights how grassroots action can shape outcomes. To date, more than 15 moratoria or pauses on AI data center projects have been enacted following community backlash. Notable examples include:

  • Festus, MO: Four city council members were removed from office after a contentious AI data center vote.

These cases illustrate the growing power of local residents to influence the deployment of high‑energy infrastructure.
