Overview

Erin Brockovich, the American environmental activist portrayed by Julia Roberts in the film named after her, has launched a new project that provides “a platform to speak up and voice concerns about AI data centers in their communities.”

The Brockovich AI Data Center Reporting website (brockovichdatacenter.com) centers on an interactive map showing major operational AI data centers and facilities under construction in the United States, as well as projects reported by the community. Some entries represent rumored or proposed projects, so not every dot on the map corresponds to an already‑running data center.

Report Statistics

  • Total reports received: 2,716
  • Largest share of reports: Texas (612 reports)
    • Sulphur Springs accounts for 297 of those reports.
    • MSB Global is planning one of the continent’s largest AI data center projects there: 3 GW capacity across 30 buildings on roughly 1,600 acres.
    • The project faces community pushback and lawsuits filed by the land’s previous owners and at least one resident (source).

Community Concerns

Based on the data from the site’s community statistics page, the primary worries are:

  1. Water usage – AI data centers can consume up to 5 million gallons per day, comparable to the daily water use of a town of 10,000–50,000 residents (Environmental and Energy Study Institute).
  2. Electricity demand – Large facilities increase the load on the grid, prompting utilities to upgrade infrastructure and often pass the costs onto consumers (EESI).
  3. Health impacts – Residents express concerns about air and noise pollution associated with data center operations.

Erin Brockovich’s Background

Brockovich is best known for her investigative work on groundwater contamination in Hinkley, California, during the early 1990s. Her efforts were instrumental in the successful lawsuit against Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E), which had been contaminating the town’s water supply and causing illness among residents.
