Electric Cars Are Making It Easier To Breathe, Study Finds
Source: Slashdot
Study Overview
A new study published in The Lancet Planetary Health examined how the growing number of electric vehicles (EVs) and plug‑in hybrids in California affects air quality. California, which has the highest concentration of plug‑in vehicles in the United States, now has enough of these cars to produce a measurable impact on atmospheric pollutants.
Key Findings
- NO₂ Reduction: Between 2019 and 2023, every additional 200 EVs or plug‑in hybrids on the road corresponded with a 1.1 % decrease in nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) levels, as measured by satellite observations that track NO₂’s unique absorption and reflection of sunlight.
- Health Implications: Lower NO₂ concentrations are linked to reduced risks of asthma attacks, bronchitis, heart disease, and stroke.
