Funding round
Sleep‑tech company Eight Sleep announced a $50 million strategic round led by Tether Investments, valuing the company at $1.5 billion. This follows a $100 million round closed last August, backed by investors such as HSG, Valor Equity Partners, Founders Fund, and Y Combinator (TechCrunch, Aug 2025).
Company background
Eight Sleep sells smart mattress accessories that track sleep patterns and adjust temperature in real time. The company was valued at $500 million post‑money in 2021 when it raised an $86 million Series C led by Valor Equity Partners (TechCrunch, Aug 2021). To date, it has raised over $310 million according to Crunchbase.
The startup reported being free‑cash‑flow positive in 2025 and plans to allocate the new funding toward new products, global expansion, and clinical validation. Eight Sleep now ships its products to more than 34 countries.
Future plans
- Regulatory expansion: The company is seeking U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for products that can detect and mitigate sleep apnea.
- AI‑driven sleep system: Eight Sleep aims to develop a sleep‑focused AI agent that proactively controls temperature, elevation, and firmness, simulating various scenarios before users get into bed.
- Proprietary data models: Early pilots of the AI‑driven guidance have led users to adjust habits such as exercise timing, caffeine intake, and sleep schedules based on app analysis.
“What we’re building doesn’t exist yet — a system that understands your body better each night and acts on that knowledge. Our goal is to build the defining health technology company of this generation,” said Matteo Franceschetti, co‑founder and CEO.
Recent product updates
- Hydro blanket: Introduced a temperature‑controlling blanket (Business Wire, May 2025).
- Pod pillow cover: Launched a pillow cover that provides temperature control for the head and neck (UAE Review).
Controversy
In October 2025, an AWS outage prevented mattress accessories from connecting to Eight Sleep’s servers, causing some beds to overheat. The company responded by adding an “outage mode” to its products for such situations (TechCrunch, Oct 2025; The Verge).
Competition
Eight Sleep competes with:
- Temperature‑control solutions: BedJet, Chillpad
- Sleep‑tracking platforms: Oura, Whoop
