CarPlay video playback arrives in iOS 26.4
Starting with iOS 26, Apple will officially allow video playback through CarPlay. The iOS 26.4 beta, released this week, appears to be the first version with support, provided two conditions are met:
- The car must be stopped.
- Automakers need to opt‑in to enable video playback.
Apple first announced the upcoming feature in June 2025, noting that video would only be allowed while the vehicle is stationary and that manufacturers must opt in. The iOS 26.4 developer beta now includes the first code signs of CarPlay video support, and Apple’s TV app is listed as supporting the feature.
Developer demo by Thomas Dye
Thomas Dye simulated a CarPlay environment and unlocked several UI elements that have not been seen before.
Virtual CarPlay TV app
Dye ran a version of Apple’s TV app in a virtual CarPlay simulation, showing how a video‑specific CarPlay app could look once the feature is officially released.

Moving video between iPhone and CarPlay
For apps that do not have dedicated CarPlay versions, Dye demonstrated a new UI element that lets users move a video from the iPhone to the connected CarPlay display.

Settings integration
A new Video section is expected to appear in the Settings app when CarPlay systems gain video support.

Outlook
The demo suggests that Apple is finalizing the on‑device side of CarPlay video playback. Once iOS 26.4 is publicly released, automakers will need to implement the required support to enable video playback for drivers when the vehicle is stationary. This marks a significant step toward bringing video content to CarPlay‑enabled cars.
