Overview

DJI has unveiled its latest smartphone gimbal, the Osmo Mobile 8P, which adds a detachable remote control with a screen. The remote lets solo creators capture video remotely, track subjects more reliably, and operate the gimbal from up to 150 feet away.

The Osmo Mobile 8P is a more professional version of the Osmo Mobile 8. It smooths action video shot with a smartphone via a three‑axis gimbal and supports native subject tracking on iPhones (Apple DockKit) and Android devices (optional Multifunctional Module 2).

Design and Remote

  • Detachable “Frametap” remote – built‑in screen, joystick, and record button.
  • Extended Multifunctional Module 2 – provides extra clearance and houses a tracking camera.
  • Built‑in 8.5‑inch extension rod and telescoping tripod feet.
  • Battery life: up to 10 hours; can also charge the phone in a pinch.

The remote mirrors the phone’s view, making it easy to frame yourself when vlogging with the rear camera or when the phone’s screen isn’t visible. You can start/stop recording from over 150 feet away.

Tracking Features

The Multifunctional Module 2 uses an integrated camera to track people, pets, cars, landmarks, etc., via DJI’s ActiveTrack 8.0 in the Mimo app (or other third‑party camera apps). It keeps subjects centered even in crowded environments, navigates around obstructions, and handles fast movements.

  • Apple DockKit support – enables tracking with the native iPhone camera app without the module.
  • Android support – requires the optional Multifunctional Module 2.

Setup and Usage

  1. Insert the phone into the magnetic holder; the clamps are angled to avoid pressing phone buttons.
  2. Release the gimbal from its lock, turn it on, and attach the phone magnetically.
  3. Connect the Multifunctional Module 2 via the included USB‑C cable (or leave it off if using Apple DockKit).

Testing with Blackmagic Camera, native iPhone/Android camera apps, and DJI’s Mimo app showed fast, accurate tracking and superior smoothing compared with phone‑built stabilization. The gimbal also works well for Zoom calls: place it on its tripod feet, adjust height, and it will follow you smoothly.

Audio Integration

The Osmo Mobile 8P is compatible with DJI’s wireless microphones, including the Mic Mini 2. Pair the transmitter directly to the phone via Bluetooth, or use DJI’s receiver for higher‑quality audio.

Creative Camera Moves

DJI adds several built‑in effects:

  • DynamicZoom – “blockbuster‑style” stretching/compressing via Move In and Move Out modes.
  • Slow Shutter – creates light‑trail effects.
  • Action Shot – fluid framing of fast‑moving subjects.
  • Widescreen mode – captures in a classic 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

The gimbal can spin infinitely (360°) and tilt the pan axis forward for low‑angle shots (e.g., child or pet perspective).

Pricing and Availability

  • Standard combo: £135 / €145 (Europe) – includes the gimbal only.
  • Advanced Tracking combo: £169 / €169 – adds the Multifunctional Module 2.
  • Creator combo: £195 / €199 – adds the Multifunctional Module 2, DJI Mic Series Mobile Receiver, Mic Mini 2 transmitter, and accessories.

The product is currently available in Europe and not yet released in the United States.
