Overview

Google Chrome can consume more storage than expected because it automatically downloads a large on‑device AI model file. When certain Chrome AI features are enabled, the browser places a 4 GB weights.bin file inside its system folders.

The weights.bin file

The weights.bin file is associated with Google’s Gemini Nano AI model. This model powers several Chrome AI tools, including:

  • Scam detection
  • Writing assistance
  • Autofill
  • Suggestion features

Gemini Nano is designed to run locally on the device, which is why the model file is stored on‑disk.

Impact on storage

Users who notice unexplained drops in available desktop storage may find that Chrome has installed the 4 GB weights.bin file in its browser directory. This can significantly reduce free space, especially on devices with limited storage capacity.
