Canva starts previewing a more powerful version of its AI assistant

Canva is releasing a preview of a more powerful AI editing suite, dubbed Canva AI 2.0. The company says this is its most significant update since the platform launched in 2013 and the result of years of investment in its own foundational design models.
Canva AI 2.0 Overview
Building on its existing AI assistant, Canva AI 2.0 introduces a conversational interface that lets users describe an idea or goal, after which the system generates a matching design. Under the hood, a new orchestration layer enables the model to tap into Canva’s suite of tools to perform complex, multi‑step tasks—such as creating an entire multi‑channel advertising campaign.

Conversational Design Interface
The interface works like a dialogue: you tell the AI what you need, and it produces a design that you can refine. This approach aims to streamline the creative process, especially for brands that need cohesive assets across multiple channels.
Editing and Persistent Memory
Canva AI 2.0 avoids a common pitfall of many image‑generation models by allowing full editability of every visual element. Users can swap images, tweak fonts, or adjust layout components without affecting the rest of the design.
The tool also incorporates persistent memory, learning from each interaction to better apply a user’s personal taste and style in future generations. A long context window helps maintain coherence throughout the design workflow.
New Integrations and Workflow Support
Canva is expanding its AI capabilities with connections to external apps, including Notion, Slack, Zoom, Gmail, Google Calendar, and more. Users can:
- Pull data from these services into designs.
- Schedule AI tasks to run in the background.
- Leverage built‑in research tools for deeper content generation.
Enhanced Coding Agent with HTML Support
The coding function has been upgraded to accept HTML imports, allowing users to bring any HTML file or AI‑generated experience into Canva’s visual editor for further tweaking without breaking the layout.

For brands, a new tool can process a visual identity and automatically apply it to new or existing designs.
Company Perspective
Danny Wu, Canva’s head of AI, emphasizes that these tools are a natural evolution rather than a pivot:
“This is something we’ve been dreaming of and working towards for quite a while. Even before ChatGPT was a thing, we were thinking, ‘what if we don’t have a template that matches your needs?’ … So I wouldn’t describe this as a pivot or shift; we’ve been wanting to offer these kinds of capabilities all along as part of our mission to make design simple.”
Availability and Access
Canva AI 2.0 is available as a research preview starting today. The first 1 million visitors to the Canva website receive early access, with rollout expanding over the coming weeks.
- The AI features remain included in Canva’s free offering.
- An optional AI Pass add‑on provides higher rate limits for power users.
