Burnout, Rust, and the Feruchemy Problem

Burnout and Rest
Burnout feels strange. You know you need rest, but rest seems impossible when your mind won’t stop running. This week I stopped pretending that productivity was the cure and allowed myself simply to exist—morning coffee with my cat watching birds, bonding with a borrowed cat, and falling down a TUI rabbit hole (shoutout to bookokrat and noctavox).
The Feruchemy Analogy
I’ve been thinking a lot about Mistborn and Feruchemy lately. In Feruchemy you can only tap what you’ve actually stored; you can’t pull the metalmind you never gave yourself. Burnout isn’t a motivation problem—it’s an empty metalmind.
Changes I’m Making
- Going all‑in on Rust.
- Swapping GUIs for CLIs.
- Being intentional instead of merely busy.
Reflection
Sometimes the real win is just making space to exist. What does rest actually look like for you?
