Bill Gates‑founded nuclear energy startup TerraPower has received approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to build a next‑generation reactor in Wyoming. This marks the first commercial‑scale, advanced nuclear power plant to ever obtain a federal permit, and it will be the first commercial reactor constructed in the United States in almost a decade.

Construction at the Wyoming plant is slated for completion by 2030. TerraPower joins several companies racing to develop smaller, more efficient reactors aimed at augmenting electrical grids that are under increasing strain from AI data centers.
