Apple’s AI acquisition and the AirPods Pro 3 rumor

Earlier this year, Apple acquired a secretive startup, Q.ai, for over $2 billion. It’s the company’s second‑largest acquisition to date and raises the question: what’s the end game?

While smart glasses seem like an obvious play, another Apple product in the pipeline also appears well‑suited for this new technology.

For a long time, we’ve heard that Apple will be developing a new version of the AirPods Pro 3 with IR cameras. Some reports suggest the cameras are intended for Visual Intelligence, but the positioning doesn’t seem ideal for that purpose. The feature may still appear, but it likely isn’t the primary function.

Q.ai specialized in analyzing facial micro‑movements and patterns to determine what you’re saying—without any audible speech. This technology makes sense for smart glasses, where there’s no real screen to interact with. However, iPhone, iPad, and Mac users could also benefit, and the IR‑camera‑equipped AirPods Pro 3 could be the path to that.

AirPods Pro with silent speech

AirPods already include an accelerometer, skin‑detect sensors, and a heart‑rate monitor. Combined with the upcoming infrared cameras, these components could enable a future generation of AirPods that let you speak silently to your Apple devices.

All the hardware would be in place; it would just be a matter of Apple delivering the right software. The prospect of interacting with smart assistants without typing or speaking loudly is exciting.

Current rumors suggest that the new AirPods Pro variant with IR cameras will debut by the end of the year.

Does this silent‑speech technology excite you? Would you consider buying a new pair of AirPods Pro 3 with IR?
