Background

Apple unveiled a redesigned, AI‑powered Siri in 2024, promising capabilities such as finding specific photos, tracking details, adding information to contact cards, editing photos, and sharing note summaries as emails. The update was originally slated for iOS users in 2025, but Apple later announced a delay, saying it would take longer than expected to deliver the features.

Delay Details

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, testing revealed problems with the new software, including the assistant taking too long to complete tasks or failing to process queries altogether. The version was reportedly so sluggish that developers believed Apple would need to push the launch back by several months.

Future Rollout Plan

Instead of a single March release, Apple is expected to roll out the new capabilities piecemeal through upcoming software updates:

  • A limited set of features may arrive next month.
  • Additional capabilities could be included in iOS 26.5 in May.
  • Further enhancements are anticipated with iOS 27 later in the year.

Google Gemini Integration

In January, Apple confirmed that Google’s Gemini models will help power the new Siri. The company stated: “After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s AI technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users.” The revamped assistant is expected to behave like an AI chatbot similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT when it becomes available.
