Apple will pay $250 million for failing to deliver its AI-powered Siri on time

Background
Apple has agreed to pay $250 million to settle a class‑action lawsuit alleging that the company misled U.S. iPhone buyers about the launch of an updated Siri announced alongside Apple Intelligence. The lawsuit claims Apple promised a more “personalized” Siri at WWDC 2024 but has failed to ship the new AI assistant almost two years later.
Settlement Details
If approved by a judge, the settlement will cover a class that includes purchasers of the iPhone 16 lineup and the iPhone 15 Pro. The agreement provides financial relief to anyone who expected Siri on their new iPhone, but Apple does not have to admit fault for advertising AI features it has not delivered.
Timeline of Siri Delays
- 2024‑2025: Apple gradually rolled out components of the text‑editing, image‑generation, and ChatGPT integration marketed as Apple Intelligence. However, a version of Siri capable of understanding device context and acting within apps never arrived.
- March 2025: Apple publicly acknowledged that it would have to delay the Siri update, more than five months after the iPhone 16 launch—a phone sold as capable of running Apple Intelligence.
- Post‑delay: Apple pulled ads that had promoted the new Siri feature in the lead‑up to the iPhone launch.
Future Plans
Apple now plans to finally release the new Siri later this year, largely thanks to a partnership with Google that allows Apple to use Google’s Gemini models. The forthcoming Siri, along with a suite of other AI features, is expected to be included in iOS 27.
