’Redefining the art form’
A new Apple Newsroom post details how four filmmakers used the advanced capture capabilities of the iPhone 17 Pro Max to produce their entries for this year’s MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in the Shot on iPhone category.
From the challenging lighting conditions in Shreela Agarwal’s 11.11 to Ritesh Sharma’s use of Cinematic Mode in She Sells Seashells, Robin Joy’s reliance on Action Mode for Pathanam (Paradise Fall), and Dhritisree Sarkar’s use of 8× optical zoom in Kathar Katha (The Tale of Katha), the story looks at how the iPhone 17 Pro Max supported different parts of each production and helped the filmmakers bring their ideas to the screen.
Apple says the filmmakers used the iPhone 17 Pro Max as their main production tool while also relying on Apple’s broader ecosystem to support the broader filmmaking process:
“To make their shorts, filmmakers Shreela Agarwal, Ritesh Sharma, Robin Joy, and Dhritisree Sarkar tapped into the pro camera system, cinema‑grade video capabilities, and advanced features of iPhone 17 Pro Max, as well as MacBook Pro with M5 and iPad Pro with M5 for additional support.”
Shreela Agarwal – 11.11
In Agarwal’s case, ProRes RAW enabled her to recover more detail in dark scenes, adjust tint and white balance, and create a brighter, cleaner image while keeping the nighttime look natural.

Robin Joy – Pathanam (Paradise Fall)
Joy said the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s Action Mode, combined with the device’s vapor‑chamber cooling, enabled him to “just lock and go,” after wanting to make the film for years but feeling it was too ambitious.

Dhritisree Sarkar – Kathar Katha (The Tale of Katha)
Sarkar used ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2 to create a vintage celluloid look in post‑production, and the 8× optical zoom at 200 mm to get closer to her protagonist’s emotional state.
