Apple reportedly targeting smart home display release around iOS 27

Overview
Apple has been developing a smart home display for years, but the product depends on the promised Siri upgrade to ship first. A new report corroborates a recent leak that claims Apple is targeting a smart home display release around iOS 27.
Launch Timing
Mark Gurman at Bloomberg reports that Apple is aiming for a September launch, the earliest opportunity after the new Siri is expected to be ready.
“Apple had then planned to release the display this month, when it hoped the new Siri would be ready,” the source said.
The smart display has reportedly been finished for several months, but the company is now looking to release it in September when the new Siri is anticipated to be complete.
The timing aligns with a clue dropped last week by leaker Kosutami — who suggested a fall launch — and a later post indicating a possible “MagSafe‑like snap‑to‑wall” feature.
Design Details
- Form factor: A square iPad‑like device that can be affixed to a half‑domed speaker base or mounted on a wall.
- User interface: Circular app icons arranged similarly to an Apple Watch home screen.
- Facial recognition: Recognizes people approaching the device and displays personalized data such as calendar events, reminders, notes, music, and news preferences.
These features suggest a more versatile offering than comparable products from Amazon (example).
AI Partnership
Earlier this year, Apple signed a deal with Google to use Gemini AI models as the brains behind enhanced Siri and Apple Intelligence features. While those upgrades have not yet materialized, the new Siri and Apple Intelligence features are expected to start arriving as soon as iOS 26.5 (possibly next month). iOS 27 is expected to be announced shortly after Apple’s annual WWDC keynote in June.
