Overview

A fake macOS version of the Ledger Live crypto wallet app scammed users, resulting in $9.5 million in cryptocurrency being stolen.

Details of the Scam

  • The counterfeit app mimicked the legitimate Ledger Live application and was distributed through the Mac App Store.
  • Unlike the real app, the fake version asked users to enter their seed phrases, allowing attackers to gain access to their wallets.
  • More than 50 victims were affected between April 7 and April 13.
  • Stolen funds were routed through the KuCoin exchange and laundered using a mixing service called AudiA6, which charges high fees.

Investigation

ZachXBT investigated the scam and shared findings on Telegram. He noted that the app had bypassed Apple’s review process and suggested that Apple could face a class‑action lawsuit due to the scale of the losses.

Given the amount of money lost, there is speculation that Apple may be subject to a class‑action lawsuit in the future.
