New subtitle customization in iOS 26.4

The usage of subtitles and captions in TV shows and movies is ever increasing, both due to the popularity of foreign‑language content and the need for clearer audio tracks.

With iOS 26.4, Apple is improving the subtitles experience in the native video player on iPhone and iPad, and a similar change is rolling out to Apple TV with tvOS 26.4.

Style controls directly in the player

  • The Subtitles menu in the native video player now includes a Style section.
  • Preset style options: Classic, Large Text, Outline Text, and Transparent Background.
  • Users can create custom styles, selecting font, size, and color.

Previously, these style settings were only reachable through Accessibility Settings. The new in‑player controls make it easier to adjust subtitle appearance on the fly, increasing awareness of the feature.

Availability

  • The functionality is built into the system’s native video player, so it works in apps such as Apple TV and Safari.
  • Any third‑party app that uses the native player will automatically benefit from the enhancement.

Release timeline

iOS 26.4 is currently in developer beta. A public release is expected in March or April, though Apple has not confirmed an exact date.
