Apple Intelligence will reportedly let you choose third-party AI models in iOS 27

Apple appears to be solidifying its AI strategy by offering users a choice of third‑party models for generative AI tasks. According to a recent Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, this functionality will arrive with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

Extensions

AI developers that join Apple’s App Store program will be able to power the company’s AI tools through a feature internally called Extensions. An in‑test message described Extensions as a way to “access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground and more.”

Prior Hints of Choice

Earlier in the year, Bloomberg reported that Apple’s upcoming AI chatbot would let users select from different AI models — a concept first hinted at in March 2026 here. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has already been integrated into Apple Intelligence for certain generative‑AI tasks, as noted in previous coverage here.
