Apple has four new iPhone satellite features rumored, here’s what’s coming

Apple’s satellite partner, GlobalStar, was acquired by Amazon this week. Apple and Amazon are now working together, and rumors indicate four new satellite features are coming to iPhone soon.
5G over satellite

Current satellite connectivity in the iPhone works very slowly, but that’s set to change with the iPhone 18 lineup. Reporting indicates that Apple’s C2 modem in the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra will add support for 5G over satellite. Faster connection speeds should make satellite features much more convenient, and Apple is also working to make achieving a satellite connection less cumbersome.
Apple Maps support

Apple Maps currently lets you download maps for offline use, but otherwise works only when connected via Wi‑Fi or cellular. According to Bloomberg, Apple is working to make Maps available over satellite as well. It’s unclear whether this will require the new 5G capabilities of the C2 modem, but that’s a possibility.
Photos in Messages app

Bloomberg also notes that Apple plans to bring support for sending photos in the Messages app over satellite. Currently, only text messages can be sent via a satellite connection—a feature that has been a lifesaver in emergencies. The ability to send photos will be useful for everyday situations and for emergencies where users need to share images of injuries or locations.
Third‑party API for apps

Apple is reportedly working on an API that will let third‑party developers tap into satellite connections for their apps. Mark Gurman writes that implementation will be up to the app makers, and not every feature or service will be compatible. Apple may initially limit this to emergency‑related features, with a broader rollout as satellite availability expands.
