Overview

Apple may be facing a supply problem with the MacBook Neo. The laptop relies on “binned” A18 Pro chips with one GPU core disabled, and demand is so strong that the supply of those cheaper leftover chips could run out before the next model is ready, according to MacRumors.

Supply Constraints

  • The all‑new MacBook Neo has become a hit, creating a “massive dilemma” for Apple, as reported by Taiwan‑based tech columnist and former Bloomberg reporter Tim Culpan.
  • In his latest Culpium newsletter, Culpan notes that the supply of binned A18 Pro chips with a 5‑core GPU will run out before Apple can fully satisfy demand.
  • Apple’s initial plan was to have suppliers build around five to six million Neo units before ending production of the A18 Pro‑based model. Strong demand may exhaust the chip supply before the second‑generation Neo with an A19 Pro chip is ready next year.
  • A18 Pro chips are manufactured on TSMC’s second‑generation 3 nm process (N3E). TSMC’s N3E lines are already operating at maximum capacity, meaning Apple may need to pay a premium to restart A18 Pro production, which would compress profit margins.
  • To meet the Neo’s specifications, Apple disables one GPU core on these chips, ensuring a 5‑core GPU across all units sold to date.

Potential Responses

  • Accept Lower Margins: Keep the starting price at $599 and absorb reduced profit margins, leveraging the Neo’s role in attracting customers to macOS and the broader Apple ecosystem.
  • Reallocate Chip Production: Shift some A18 Pro production originally earmarked for other devices to the Neo, though this would still be costlier than the initial batch price.
  • Discontinue the $599 Model: Phase out the 256 GB configuration, leaving only the $699 model with 512 GB storage and Touch ID. This is considered unlikely in the near term given Apple’s emphasis on affordability.
  • Accelerate A19 Pro‑Based Neo: Move up the release of a Neo equipped with the iPhone 17 Pro’s A19 Pro chip. This option would be more expensive until a sufficient stockpile of binned A19 Pro chips with a 5‑core GPU is built.

In any scenario, Apple must balance supply constraints, pricing strategy, and profit margins while maintaining the Neo’s appeal as an entry‑level Mac.
