Apple Announces Ads Are Coming to Apple Maps
Source: MacRumors
Overview
Apple announced that ads will be added to the Apple Maps app on iPhone and iPad in the United States and Canada, launching “this summer.”
How Ads Will Appear
- Businesses in the U.S. and Canada can place ads in Maps search results.
- Ads will also appear at the top of a new Suggested Places section, which shows recommendations based on what’s trending nearby, the user’s recent searches, and more.
- Each ad will be labeled “Ad,” similar to the ads shown in App Store search results.
Privacy
Apple emphasizes that the ads will maintain the same privacy standards as Maps without ads:
- A user’s location and the ads they see or interact with are not linked to their Apple Account.
- Personal data stays on the device, is not collected or stored by Apple Ads, and is not shared with third parties.
“Maps with ads is just as private as Maps without ads. Where you go and the ads you see and interact with are not associated with your Apple Account.” – Apple
Impact
The addition of ads is expected to boost Apple’s services revenue, though some customers may view the change negatively.
