Background

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued an ultimatum to Anthropic, threatening to cancel a $200 million contract and label the company a “supply chain risk” if it removed safeguards on its AI. CEO Dario Amodei wrote in a blog post that Anthropic could not “in good conscience” comply with a Pentagon edict to strip guardrails from its Claude AI system.

Pentagon’s Demands

The Department of Defense demanded that Claude be made available for “all lawful purposes,” including mass surveillance and the development of fully autonomous weapons that can operate without human supervision. The DoD also requested an assessment of its reliance on Claude as a preliminary step toward potentially designating Anthropic as a supply‑chain risk—a label traditionally reserved for firms from adversarial nations.

Anthropic’s Response

Amodei emphasized the company’s preference to continue serving the Department and its warfighters with the two requested safeguards in place. He stated that Anthropic is ready to support U.S. national security while maintaining its safety stack.

When the deadline of 5:01 PM on Friday passed without a concession, Amodei said that if the Pentagon chose to offboard Anthropic, the company would “work to enable a smooth transition to another provider, avoiding any disruption to ongoing military planning, operations or other critical missions.”

Potential alternative providers mentioned include Grok, Google’s Gemini, and OpenAI.

Potential Implications

  • Operational Dependence: Claude has been the only AI model cleared for the military’s most sensitive tasks in intelligence, weapons development, and battlefield operations.
  • Recent Use Cases: The model was reportedly used in the Venezuelan raid that exfiltrated President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
  • Industry Impact: Anthropic’s stance tests its claim of being the most safety‑forward AI company, especially after it recently dropped its flagship safety pledge.

The situation now hinges on whether the Pentagon follows through on its threats, which could have serious repercussions for Anthropic.
