Revenue and Profitability

Anthropic is on track to post $10.9 billion in revenue for the quarter ending in June, roughly double the revenue it generated in the first quarter, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The company expects an operating profit of $559 million, which would mark its first profitable quarter since its founding in 2021. These figures were disclosed to a group of investors during its current funding round, a round that could push Anthropic’s valuation past that of OpenAI.

Despite the likely profitability for this quarter, Anthropic does not anticipate sustained profitability in the immediate quarters that follow, as it plans to increase spending on computing infrastructure and other operational expenses.

Market Position and Product Growth

Anthropic’s chatbot Claude has recently climbed to the top of the Apple App Store rankings, gaining visibility after a high‑profile clash with the U.S. Defense Department. The company, once less known than rivals such as OpenAI, has been steadily expanding its enterprise customer base.

Government Relations and Controversies

Earlier this year, CEO Dario Amodei publicly refused to comply with a Pentagon order to remove safety guardrails from Anthropic’s AI systems, citing concerns over mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. The Defense Department subsequently labeled Anthropic a “supply chain risk,” a designation typically reserved for firms from adversarial nations.

Former President Trump ordered federal agencies to stop using Claude, yet some agencies continue to employ Anthropic’s technology. Notably, the NSA is reportedly using Claude Mythos Preview, an unreleased model designed for cyber‑defense applications.

Anthropic is actively seeking ways to regain broader acceptance within the U.S. government, including opening an office in Washington, D.C., and pursuing legal avenues to resolve its dispute with the Pentagon.

Comparison with OpenAI

OpenAI, the most prominent name in generative AI, has yet to achieve profitability and does not expect to do so until 2029–2030. The company is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) that could occur as early as September, according to The New York Times.

Bloomberg has reported that Anthropic is also weighing an IPO, potentially targeting an October listing.
