What’s New in Holodeck 9.0.2.0
Expanded VCF Support & Deployment Capabilities
- VCF 9.0.2.0 – Deploy the latest VCF version while retaining support for:
- VCF 9.0.0.0, 9.0.1.0
- VCF 5.2, 5.2.1, 5.2.2
- Supervisor Deployment in Management Domain – Use the new
-DeploySupervisorMgmtDomainparameter to install Supervisor in the management domain, extending your VMware Kubernetes options. - VCF Automation – All Apps Org Creation – Add the All Apps Org as a Day 2 operation, simplifying post‑deployment automation.
Enhanced Day 2 Operations
The new Update‑HoloDeckInstance cmdlet replaces the old -Interactive mode and adds several capabilities:
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Additional Cluster Deployment | Deploy extra clusters to existing VCF instances. |
| All Apps Org Deployment | Enable All Apps Org creation in VCF Automation. |
| Targeted Parameters | Use -Site, -VIDomain, and operation‑specific flags for fine‑grained control. |
Reliability & Troubleshooting Improvements
- Dedicated Error Logging – Errors are written to a separate file under
/holodeck-runtime/logs/with full diagnostics (stack trace, exception type, error record). - Enhanced HoloRouter – DNSMASQ is split into distinct DNS and DHCP pods, improving reliability and scalability.
- Automated Certificate Trust – HTTPS certificates are automatically trusted between the VCF Installer and an offline depot.
- Smart Retry Logic – Bundle downloads automatically retry on failure, reducing deployment interruptions.
Cmdlet Enhancements
| Cmdlet | Change |
|---|---|
New‑HoloDeckInstance | InstanceID is now mandatory; -DeploySupervisor renamed to -DeploySupervisorWldDomain. |
Get‑HoloDeckInstance | Returns detailed information about nested components created by New‑HoloDeckInstance. |
Start‑HoloDeckInstance / Stop‑HoloDeckInstance | Updated to correctly handle complex deployments and enforce proper power‑off sequencing. |
Get‑HolodeckServiceIPPools | New cmdlet that lists IP‑pool allocations for all Holodeck services, aiding network troubleshooting. |
Quality & Stability Improvements
- Applied NSX image‑validation workaround for VCF 9.0.0.0 and 9.0.1.0 deployments.
- Fixed offline‑depot authentication and proxy‑protocol handling.
- Resolved state‑management bugs affecting Day 2 operations.
- Refined DNSMASQ configuration and service definitions.
- Strengthened pre‑check validations and user‑input handling.
For a full list of resolved issues and detailed upgrade instructions, see the official release notes.
Why Holodeck Matters
In today’s rapidly evolving technology landscape, the ability to quickly test and validate new capabilities is critical. Holodeck addresses the traditional challenges of deploying nested VCF environments:
- Dramatically reduced hardware requirements – Run complete VCF environments on a single ESX host or vSphere cluster with sufficient capacity.
- Self‑contained infrastructure – Built‑in NTP, DNS, BGP, and DHCP services eliminate dependency on external data‑center infrastructure.
- Isolated networking – With NSX on your infrastructure—or even a single physical host—you can deploy multiple, conflict‑free nested environments without complex VLAN and BGP configurations.
- Automation and repeatability – Near hands‑off deployment that’s consistent and easily reproducible.
Whether you’re building expertise in VCF operations, testing new features, or conducting training sessions, Holodeck provides the flexible, reliable platform you need.
