Holodeck 9.0.2 – General Availability

The latest maintenance release builds on the solid foundation of Holodeck 9.0 and 9.0.1, delivering:

  • Enhanced capabilities for nested VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) environments
  • Improved reliability and stability across Day 2 operations
  • Expanded Day 2 functionality to simplify ongoing management

A Heartfelt Thank You

A huge thank you to our growing community for your continued engagement, feedback, and adoption of Holodeck. Your insights drive continuous improvement and help us deliver a tool that truly meets your testing and training needs.

Why Holodeck Still Leads the Way

Holodeck continues to revolutionize how teams deploy, test, and understand VCF by providing:

  • A self‑contained solution that requires no external dependencies
  • Automated provisioning and teardown of nested environments
  • Repeatable workflows that eliminate the complexity and resource overhead typical of nested setups

What’s New in 9.0.2

CategoryEnhancement
PerformanceFaster VCF stack provisioning and reduced VM boot times
ReliabilityHardened error handling and automatic recovery for common failure scenarios
Day 2 OperationsNew scripts for patching, scaling, and health‑checking VCF clusters
UsabilityUpdated CLI help, clearer log output, and additional example configurations
CompatibilitySupport for the latest VCF releases and updated guest OS images

Get Started

  1. Download the latest release from the Holodeck GitHub releases page.
  2. Review the updated README.md and the new Day 2 operation guides.
  3. Deploy a fresh nested VCF environment or upgrade an existing Holodeck 9.0/9.0.1 deployment using the provided upgrade script.

“Holodeck makes complex VCF testing feel like a single‑click experience.”Community Feedback

We look forward to seeing how you leverage Holodeck 9.0.2 in your labs and projects. Happy testing!

What’s New in Holodeck 9.0.2.0

Expanded VCF Support & Deployment Capabilities

  • VCF 9.0.2.0 – Deploy the latest VCF version while retaining support for:
    • VCF 9.0.0.0, 9.0.1.0
    • VCF 5.2, 5.2.1, 5.2.2
  • Supervisor Deployment in Management Domain – Use the new -DeploySupervisorMgmtDomain parameter to install Supervisor in the management domain, extending your VMware Kubernetes options.
  • VCF Automation – All Apps Org Creation – Add the All Apps Org as a Day 2 operation, simplifying post‑deployment automation.

Enhanced Day 2 Operations

The new Update‑HoloDeckInstance cmdlet replaces the old -Interactive mode and adds several capabilities:

FeatureDescription
Additional Cluster DeploymentDeploy extra clusters to existing VCF instances.
All Apps Org DeploymentEnable All Apps Org creation in VCF Automation.
Targeted ParametersUse -Site, -VIDomain, and operation‑specific flags for fine‑grained control.

Reliability & Troubleshooting Improvements

  • Dedicated Error Logging – Errors are written to a separate file under /holodeck-runtime/logs/ with full diagnostics (stack trace, exception type, error record).
  • Enhanced HoloRouter – DNSMASQ is split into distinct DNS and DHCP pods, improving reliability and scalability.
  • Automated Certificate Trust – HTTPS certificates are automatically trusted between the VCF Installer and an offline depot.
  • Smart Retry Logic – Bundle downloads automatically retry on failure, reducing deployment interruptions.

Cmdlet Enhancements

CmdletChange
New‑HoloDeckInstanceInstanceID is now mandatory; -DeploySupervisor renamed to -DeploySupervisorWldDomain.
Get‑HoloDeckInstanceReturns detailed information about nested components created by New‑HoloDeckInstance.
Start‑HoloDeckInstance / Stop‑HoloDeckInstanceUpdated to correctly handle complex deployments and enforce proper power‑off sequencing.
Get‑HolodeckServiceIPPoolsNew cmdlet that lists IP‑pool allocations for all Holodeck services, aiding network troubleshooting.

Quality & Stability Improvements

  • Applied NSX image‑validation workaround for VCF 9.0.0.0 and 9.0.1.0 deployments.
  • Fixed offline‑depot authentication and proxy‑protocol handling.
  • Resolved state‑management bugs affecting Day 2 operations.
  • Refined DNSMASQ configuration and service definitions.
  • Strengthened pre‑check validations and user‑input handling.

For a full list of resolved issues and detailed upgrade instructions, see the official release notes.

Why Holodeck Matters

In today’s rapidly evolving technology landscape, the ability to quickly test and validate new capabilities is critical. Holodeck addresses the traditional challenges of deploying nested VCF environments:

  • Dramatically reduced hardware requirements – Run complete VCF environments on a single ESX host or vSphere cluster with sufficient capacity.
  • Self‑contained infrastructure – Built‑in NTP, DNS, BGP, and DHCP services eliminate dependency on external data‑center infrastructure.
  • Isolated networking – With NSX on your infrastructure—or even a single physical host—you can deploy multiple, conflict‑free nested environments without complex VLAN and BGP configurations.
  • Automation and repeatability – Near hands‑off deployment that’s consistent and easily reproducible.

Whether you’re building expertise in VCF operations, testing new features, or conducting training sessions, Holodeck provides the flexible, reliable platform you need.
