Google says 2026 will be one of the biggest years for Android, and that momentum extends beyond the mobile OS. During the Android Show: I/O Edition, the company unveiled a host of major changes coming to Android Auto and cars with Google built‑in.
UI Redesign
The first big change is a full rework of Android Auto’s user interface, now built on Google’s Material 3 Expressive design. Highlights include:
- More striking fonts and updated wallpapers
- Smoother animations
- Support for widgets borrowed from the mobile platform, allowing shortcuts for favorite contacts, weather, and virtual buttons for garage doors
- Adaptive layouts that can accommodate unusually shaped displays, such as the parallelogram screen in the new BMW i7 (source)

Immersive Navigation
Google’s “Immersive Navigation” introduces detailed 3D maps that display:
- Traffic lights, stop signs, lane counts, and nearby buildings
- Real‑time lane‑level guidance using the vehicle’s onboard cameras (for Google‑built‑in models)
The feature is powered by Gemini, Google’s AI engine, which also brings:
- Better contextual awareness
- Support for Magic Cue (first seen on the Pixel 10 family) to surface addresses, appointments, and other relevant info without distracting the driver
Entertainment Upgrades
- Video: HD playback up to 60 fps, rolling out later this year across brands like BMW, Ford, Kia, Hyundai, Volvo, and Mercedes‑Benz.
- Audio‑only transition: When you start driving while watching a movie, Android Auto can switch the clip to audio‑only mode—ideal for video podcasts.
- Media apps: Visual updates for YouTube Music and Spotify.
- Spatial sound: Dolby Atmos support (requires compatible speakers and manufacturer approval).

Deeper Integration for Google Built‑in Vehicles
For cars with Google built‑in (also known as Android Automotive), the OS will integrate more tightly with vehicle hardware:
- Gemini can answer vehicle‑specific questions, such as the meaning of a dashboard indicator light or whether an item will fit in the trunk.
- Immersive Navigation can leverage the car’s cameras for precise lane detection and real‑time directions.
Availability
Google has not provided an exact timetable, but the updates to Android Auto and Google‑built‑in vehicles are expected to roll out later this year.
