AMD's open-source openSIL firmware is being ported to Zen 5 motherboard early — replacement for AGESA shows up ahead of Zen 6
Source: Tom’s Hardware
Background
AMD is preparing to replace its AGESA microcode with an open‑source successor called openSIL, starting with Zen 6. In the meantime, the Polish open‑source consulting firm 3mbdeb announced that the first stages of porting openSIL to a consumer Zen 5 motherboard are underway.
Target Board
The target board is the MSI B850‑P Pro (Amazon link). Enthusiasts can now try openSIL on this board before it appears on AMD’s next‑generation CPUs, though 3mbdeb stresses that this is a proof of concept and “not intended for production use.”
Previous Work
Work on integrating openSIL with Coreboot on the MSI board builds on earlier efforts for the Gigabyte MZ33‑AR1, a server board designed for AMD’s EPYC 9005 series CPUs. AMD published its openSIL initialization code for the Turin server chips well before releasing the same code for its desktop Phoenix CPUs, so the B850‑P Pro benefits from the development work already done on the Gigabyte board.
