AMC Theatres Will Refuse To Screen AI Short Film After Online Uproar
Source: Slashdot
Background
An anonymous reader reported that an AI short‑film contest winner was slated to screen before feature presentations in AMC Theatres, with a national two‑week run planned. The short, Thanksgiving Day by Igor Alferov, won the inaugural Frame Forward AI Animated Film Festival.
Controversy
When the news spread on social media, many expressed concern about exhibitors showing AI‑generated content, singling out AMC Theatres for criticism.
The short, however, is not programmed directly by exhibitors. It is provided by Screenvision Media, a third‑party company that manages the 20‑minute, advertising‑driven pre‑show that runs before movies. Screenvision co‑organized the festival with Modern Uprising Studios and supplies pre‑show content to multiple theater chains, not just AMC.
AMC’s Response
After The Hollywood Reporter contacted AMC, the chain issued the following statement to THR on Thursday:
“This content is an initiative from Screenvision Media, which manages pre‑show advertising for several movie theatre chains in the United States and runs in fewer than 30 percent of AMC’s U.S. locations. AMC was not involved in the creation of the content or the initiative and has informed Screenvision that AMC locations will not participate.”
