Background
Amazon had reportedly given a series order in 2025 for a new Stargate series. Variety reported that studio executives were concerned the show would primarily appeal to longtime fans. According to ScreenRant, the project originated in 2022 after Amazon acquired MGM Studios.
The series was to be executive‑produced by Dean Devlin (co‑writer of the 1994 Stargate film), Joby Harold, and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi were attached as consulting producers, both of whom have extensive histories with the Stargate franchise.
Cancellation
On X, Michael Shanks—who portrayed Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG‑1— responded to the news with a brief comment:
“Yep. They did that.”
Joe Mallozzi pushed back against the notion that the series was being designed solely for diehard fans, stating:
“Nope. No. Sorry. Gonna have to push back on this. We were ever mindful of creating a show that would have broad appeal.”
In a follow‑up post, Mallozzi elaborated on why the cancellation was disappointing, noting the series’ potential to expand the franchise.
Legacy of the Stargate Franchise
Before the planned series was cancelled, the Stargate universe had been built on the 1994 film by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, starring Kurt Russell and James Spader. The franchise subsequently grew to include:
- 10 seasons of Stargate SG‑1
- 5 seasons of Stargate Atlantis
- 2 seasons of Stargate Universe
- 1 season of the animated series Stargate Infinity
- The web miniseries Stargate Origins
- The 2008 direct‑to‑video movies Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate Continuum
- Numerous video games and other media
These entries have cemented Stargate as a long‑running and beloved science‑fiction property.
