TL;DR

  • The new Fire TV Stick HD is the second Amazon streaming stick to launch with Vega OS.
  • Some customers are being warned that they won’t be able to sideload apps.
  • Amazon will continue to support a majority of Fire TV streaming sticks and cubes until 2030.

New Fire TV Stick HD and Vega OS

Amazon recently announced the new Fire TV Stick HD, its second streaming stick powered by Vega OS, Amazon’s new Linux‑based operating system. By moving away from Fire OS (a fork of Android), questions have arisen about app compatibility and the ability to sideload applications. Amazon appears to be pre‑emptively addressing these concerns by displaying warnings to shoppers.

Pre‑order warning about sideloading

The Fire TV Stick HD is currently available for pre‑order on Amazon. Some shoppers see an alert box (via Cord Cutters News) that reads:

“For enhanced security, this device prevents sideloading or installing apps from unknown sources. Only apps from the Amazon Appstore are available for download.”

Warning box shown on the Amazon product page

The warning suggests that Vega OS devices may block sideloading. While sideloading has never been officially supported on Fire TV sticks, it has been a common practice among users. Notably, the warning does not appear for all shoppers; some see the product page without any alert.

Software support extension until 2030

In related news, Amazon announced that a wide range of its current Fire TV hardware will continue to receive compatibility and security updates through December 31, 2030. The supported devices include:

  • Fire TV Stick 4K Select
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Plus
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max (second generation)
  • Fire TV Stick 4K (second generation)
  • Fire TV Stick HD (second generation)
  • Fire TV Stick HD (first generation)
  • Fire TV Stick Lite
  • Fire TV Stick (third generation)
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max (first generation)
  • Fire TV Cube (third generation)

The only exception is the original Fire TV Stick 4K, which will receive support until December 31, 2029.

Kindle support ending

Amazon’s support announcement comes as the company also began notifying customers that it will end support for older Kindle devices. An email sent to users warned that support will cease on May 20, 2026 for the following models:

  • First‑ and second‑generation Kindle
  • Kindle DX and DX Graphite
  • Kindle Keyboard
  • Kindle 4
  • Kindle Touch
  • Kindle 5
  • First‑generation Kindle Paperwhite

These changes reflect Amazon’s broader effort to streamline software updates across its product ecosystem.
