TL;DR

  • Amazon announced late last year that a system‑wide dark mode was in the works for Kindle Colorsoft models.
  • The rollout begins today and will continue over the next few weeks.
  • Kindle Colorsoft devices also receive new Smart Shapes for note‑taking.

Background

E‑readers already provide an eye‑friendly experience thanks to their reflective electrophoretic displays, which are gentler than typical phone or tablet screens. Amazon previously added a dark mode to its monochrome Kindle line, but the color‑screen Kindle Colorsoft (including the new Colorsoft Scribe) lacked a system‑wide option. The closest feature was Page Color, which only inverted colors for supported titles.

Dark mode rollout

Amazon now confirms that the long‑awaited dark mode is being rolled out to Kindle Colorsoft devices. The update allows you to apply dark‑mode styling not only to books but also to the entire Kindle UI. Importantly, you can choose which screens use dark mode, so you can keep certain areas—like notebooks—in light mode if you prefer.

Smart Shapes

Alongside dark mode, Amazon is introducing Smart Shapes for the Colorsoft line. These tools let you draw rough geometric shapes by hand, which the device then refines into clean lines and precise curves, making notes look sharper and more organized.

Availability

The dark‑mode and Smart Shapes updates will be delivered automatically to Kindle Colorsoft and Kindle Colorsoft Scribe devices over the coming days and weeks.
