The global component crisis has reached unprecedented levels, affecting not only RAM and SSDs but also graphics cards, which have become extremely expensive worldwide. In South Korea, a thief took advantage of the situation and stole three high‑end GPUs valued at roughly $11,000.
Theft Overview
The CCTV footage shows the thief exiting the store with his torso wrapped in three boxes. The shop owner noted that additional memory or SSDs might also have been taken, and an inventory check is underway to confirm the total damage.
Stolen GPUs and Valuation
The three graphics cards taken were:
- ROG Astral RTX 5090
- Aorus Master RTX 5090
- Colorful iGame RTX 5080 Vulcan
According to the vendor, these cards are worth 17 million Korean won (about $11,778). If RAM and storage were also stolen, the total loss could exceed 20 million won (approximately $13,845). Current market listings in the region place the combined value of the three GPUs between $10,000 and $11,000, aligning with the shop owner’s estimate.
The vendor expressed empathy, stating, “I think this happened because everyone is going through hard times,” and offered leniency if the goods are returned.
Police Investigation
South Korean police are actively searching for the perpetrator. Although the robber wore a mask and gloves, the entire incident was captured on video, and serial numbers on the GPUs can be tracked, increasing the likelihood of a swift arrest.
