Charges and Modus Operandi
A 22‑year‑old Alabama man, Jamarcus Mosley, pleaded guilty to extortion, cyberstalking, and computer fraud after hijacking the social‑media accounts of hundreds of young women—including minors—between April 2022 and May 2025.
Mosley impersonated the victims’ friends and used other tactics to trick them into providing account‑recovery codes and passwords. He then took control of their Snapchat, Instagram, and other accounts.
After gaining access, he threatened to publicly release private nude images and videos or lock the victims out of their accounts unless they complied with his demands, which included:
- Surrendering full access to additional accounts
- Sending him sexually explicit content
- Paying various sums of money
“Mosley is the dangerous online stranger who every parent fears. By exploiting the trust of teens and young adults, Mosley hacked into their accounts to steal intimate and sexually suggestive images and extort them over a three‑year period,” said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg.
“This cruel, calculated scheme is the latest reminder that everyone must exercise great care with whom they interact online.”
